Who new social media, with its various platforms and tools like the #hashtag, would become such an amazing channel for companies to effectively get their message out – and to engage their audience.

You may have noticed that some social media posts incorporate many hashtags. Or maybe you’re not sure why a hashtag, a hash or pound sign (#) that proceeds a word or phrase, is even there.

A hashtag is a type of metadata tag used on social networks such as Twitter and other microblogging services, allowing users to apply dynamic, user-generated tagging which makes it possible for others to easily find messages with a specific theme or content.

Remember to capitalize the first letter of each word and don’t include apostrophes, commas, etc. Most importantly, watch your spelling because spell check programs don’t usually recognize hashtags. Below are some tips for using hashtags on the three most popular social media platforms:


  • Use one specific hashtag per post 
  • It’s not necessary to use a hashtag in EVERY post


  • Use MANY hashtags, recommendation is 9 to 11, with a 30 hashtag maximum per post
  • Use trending hashtags and tie them back to your brand, for tracking purposes


  • Tweet often throughout the day
  • It’s recommended to limit hashtag use to 2 or 3
  • Don’t forget the character limit
