SEO 101: Top 7 Tips to Rank Higher Without a Pro

It comes as no surprise that SEO is imperative to driving success for your small business. There are plenty of marketers and agencies out there that can handle this for you, but if you are looking for a DIY approach, then you have to start with the basics.

Let’s dive straight in to the top seven tips to achieving better results with SEO.

1. Keyword Research

Before you create a ton of content for your website, make sure you plan out your keyword strategy. Keywords are the words or phrases that your target audience searches for when they are trying to find products and services or searching for an answer to a specific problem. Search engines will match up the most relevant content to the search to generate the most accurate results from websites, blogs and images.

There are a number of tools that give you valuable insights into which keywords you should focus on, but Google’s Keyword Planner is a great place to start.

2. Invest in the Long Tail

Longtail keywords make up the majority of all search engine traffic.

Ranking for the most trafficked keywords is undoubtedly effective.  But at the same time, trying to rank for those terms can be a long, hard and expensive endeavor. Instead, spend some time building out a targeted strategy around relevant long tail keywords. Long tail keywords are longer and more specific phrases that users search when they are closer to making a purchase or finding what they are looking for.

3. Blog Consistently

Pages on your website don’t change every day (and that’s a good thing). So, with Google always looking for new content, blogging is a great way to generate new and relevant content for the search engines to index. Remember as you blog, write your content for your ideal buyer and the challenges they face. The more useful or interesting your content is to the target audience – the more likely they are to read and share it.

Additionally, you can utilize guest blogging. Identify influencers and leaders in your space who write quality content and partner with them to create content that links back to your site. This is a great way to boost traffic and engagements.

4. Distribute and Share

Great content doesn’t get results simply because it exists. The second piece to the puzzle is ensuring that the content is seen.

There are three ways to help your content reach the target audience which are: earned, owned and paid content distribution. The first option occurs when third-parties share your content through their channels. Owned content distribution is when you take the initiative to organically share your content. The final option occurs when you opt to put budget spend behind your content and pay for clicks.

5.Use Links

In order to help your ranking and make things easier on your target audience, there are two types of links you should be taking full advantage of.

Internal link – An internal link connects one page of a website to a different page on the same website. By using internal links in your site content and blogs it improves readability for your visitors, rankings for keywords, and Google’s ability to crawl your site.

Inbound links – The goal of inbound linking is to get outside links from sites, directories and forums that have a solid domain authority and link them back to your site. If your business gets mentioned on a site with a higher page rank than yours, it will boost your page rank.

6. Use SEO Friendly URLs

Making sure your URLs are clean and optimized is necessary to rank highly on SERPs (search engine results pages).

Keep URLs short so that they are both easy to read and type. Also, delete filler words such as and, the, and symbols such as @. If you have to separate words in your URL use hyphens instead of underscores so that Google can index the page.

7. Use Analytics

As you work toward improving your SEO, you need to be able to determine what is working and what is not. Google Analytics is a free tool to help you to monitor your traffic, see where your traffic is coming from, learn which pages are converting the most traffic into leads, and measure your overall conversion rate.

There you have it! Before paying a specialist, try out a few (or all) of these SEO tips on your own. You might be surprised just how quickly your ranking will improve.
