Social Media Authenticity: Your Small Business Needs More Of it

As a fresh graduate with a Psychology degree, I had no clue what I was going to do for work. I was pursuing my Masters in Marketing but had no real experience to land the marketing job I wanted. So, like most, I found myself in sales.

A few months back, I was going back and forth with this prospect who just was so upset about why I called her (after she filled out a form requesting information). After about 10 minutes I gave up and just said “Look, I’ll be transparent with you, my role is to reach out to see if you could be a potential customer and then set a demo. She replied with “Oh ok, yeah I would love a demo”.

Moral of the story? Be more transparent in your approach because most people will respect you or your brand more and you can build so much more trust.

Social Media Authenticity

You and me both know that there are so many different brands to choose from when looking for products. Small businesses especially have to complete with local competitors but also bigger brands.

Competitors may have a larger social media presence, but are they showing their real self? Or are they just giving the people what they think they want?

Leslie Licano with Forbes tells us “Being genuine is a vital part of connecting with followers as, now more than ever, consumers are seeking authentic experiences and holding brands accountable for their content.” (Licano, 2019) Show your consumers the real side of your brand, what it’s actually like to be apart of the company. This will help in building long lasting relationships that are real. It will also help your brand grow through word of mouth, one of the most authentic ways to grow.

Through social media transparency and authenticity, small business consumers will feel a sense of genuineness that only comes from being your true self.

Tips For Authentic Success

  • Tell your story- It is important for your audience to know who you are, why you are posting, and how you can really help them. Don’t be afraid to share your start up story or why your small business means so much to you.
  • Post about your team– As a consumer myself, when I see a small business posting about their employees, I stop scrolling. It gives me a sense of gratefulness and authenticity to see behind the scenes. I want to see who’s working hard to keep your small business running each day.
  • Share your failures– It is easy to post on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter about your wins. It is not so easy to do the same when you and your business fail. This could mean sharing mistakes you have made, deals you lost, or goals you missed. This is an easy way to be transparent so that your audience knows you are human too.
  • User Generated Content– “Recent reports show that 60 percent of consumers believe user-generated content is the most authentic and influential form of content (Ring, 2019) Post pictures or videos of your customers tagging you on their page/story. This shows that you care about your customers. In turn, this approach will help grow brand awareness in no time.
