Information for small business to start with creative video on social media
I should first explain that I am a Star Wars fanatic and a social media professional. The two worlds, which often collide, provide interesting brainstorming scenarios. In this article, I will give you an easy five-step guide to help you get started with videos on social media. You will find that I reference the show The Mandalorian in an effort to share a unique point of view. Comical, but most certainly connected.
Are you not up to date on The Mandalorian and Star Wars terminology? I have provided a few sources at the end of this article to help.
Most bounty hunters have plans for how they will approach a job, the Mandalorian begins a mission with five essential items. Those particular items that I will be using in this scenario are his Purpose, a Client, the Bounty, his Ship, and his Gear. I throw in a Bonus too. What I will be providing you is fun tidbits from the Mandalorian and how you can get started with social video. My only hope, see what I did there, is this will serve as a light-hearted reminder for you as you go forth on your video creation pursuit.

Every business has goals. Establishing goals is important. A goal gives the purpose of your efforts. Be sure to elaborate on your goals. Brand Building. Making more money. These are not enough. To be successful, use a SMART framework for quality goal-setting. The Mandalorian selects specific bounties that he can get, easy to measure based on how many bounties he wants to take on, achievable based on his skills, relevant for his livelihood, and he is timely in retrieving the bounties quickly.

Your business has specific customers that fit into a niche market. Everyone is not your target. The more targeted an audience, the easier to reach. Where should you begin? Here is an amazing list by Hootsuite on finding your social media target audience. Knowing your audience will help in what video content you create, and the tone it comes across in. The Mandalorian knows that clients have needs, and he looks to meet those needs to get paid.

Messaging and goods are integral in reaching your social media audience. Simply put, you must publish great video content. You may miss your only opportunity, and you may never get it back. It is important to find something unique to the business. Jodi Harris’ Content Marketing Institute article explained a useful content strategy. “Defining your content mission helps with tactical decision making…Team members will have clear guidelines to determine which creative ideas are the right fit for your brand’s story and which ones may not serve their unique purpose.” Tell your story through video. The Mandalorian has a special history. In The Mandalorian, we begin to uncover his past through flashbacks. Sharing that shows who he is, and why he has become who he is. It is unique to him.

Next, is understanding how you will get the message to your audience. Social media has many platforms, or networks, to choose from. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and others. Which is best to reach your audience? Know your audience. Certain age demographics and behaviors will come into play. Reaching a large number of 50-65 year olds on TikTok is not going to happen. Recent research shows demographics on social media. Now consider how and where video is consumed by your audience. YouTube is an amazing place for video. If you are creative and looking for a younger audience, TikTok is hot. The Mandalorian trusts that his ship will deliver. He may take hits and have issues along the way. That’s okay. He knows it will accomplish the job at hand.

What tools will you have in place to help you? With the smartphones we have today, it is easy to create quality social videos with the camera…or a video creation app. Vimeo posted a fun tutorial on The basics of creating video with your phone. As you progress, Vimeo has more video school lessons too. As you grow in video creation and editing, you can begin adding other tools as needed. Lighting, lenses, editing tools, digital camera, and the list goes on. Start with the basics. Just like the Mandalorian, who has his Amban Rifle, Vambrace, and Helmet, his tools work together to benefit his efforts and get the bounty to his client.
Bonus – TEAM
As you move forward, consider who might be on your team. Depending on the job, the Mandalorian had help. Cara Dune as his eyes and fighter. Greef Karga provided jobs and inside information. Kuiil with the technological know-how. Knowing your strengths, and weaknesses, allows you to search and find a teammate that supplements you.
