Your probably thinking to yourself, I have a website, a blog is a lot of work and I just don’t have the time or resources to maintain both. Your website provides links to your products and service offerings, information about your company and contact information, what more do they need? What you may not realize is that a well-managed blog can drive consumers to your website, giving your products and services more visibility or should we say more clout online. That’s right; blogs are a great tool for increasing SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
What is SEO?
According to MOZ, The Beginner’s Guide to SEO, “SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results”. If you are visual learner, like myself, take a couple of minutes to watch this video by Search Engine Land, it gives a quick overview.
Now that we have covered what SEO is let’s discuss the 3 reasons you should be blogging.
You’re A Subject Matter Expert
Blogging gives customers to see you in another light, you have the opportunity to be a leader in your industry offering solutions to your customers problems through your posts. When you are talking about what the customer wants to hear or solving a problem for the customer they will share your content in return. Places links back to your website in that content increases the popularity and rank-ability of your website.
Customers have the opportunity to engage in a conversation with either through the comments on the blog or social media platforms. It opens your company to feedback, negative or positive, that you may not have heard through your regular customer service channels. Once you publish your content, sharing through social media sites like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Google+ increases the chances of the content being seen and shared.
Move To The Front Of The Line
Think about your own behaviors when browsing the Internet. You enter the keywords of the topic you are researching, return 10 pages of search results, I personally skip the Sponsored Links, after that I typically choose a link towards the top of the results, that is where you want to be. Creating engaging sharable content prompts readers to share your posts creating link backs to your content which in return increase your SEO. This increased traffic in return will help move you up in the search engine results (increased ranking).

- Decide how you will use the blog, your blog should be an extension of your online brand.
- Have a plan, who will post, when will your post and how will you post?
- Include an About Us page and make sure to revisit it often to keep your information current.
- Use social media sharing widgets to make is easy for readers to share your content.
- Pick keywords to use consistently throughout your posts.
Most of all, don’t be afraid to start the blog, the idea if it is overwhelming especially if writing is not your strong suite. Take it one paragraph at a time.
