Mental Health: 3 Practical Tips For Entrepreneurs

Life as a small business owner can become unexpectedly isolating and overwhelming. Within a short period of time, this can be detrimental to your mental health. Deciding on the business name as well as the product, or service you want to offer is only half the battle. Unfortunately, even if you’ve already prepared, being tasked with all of the nuances that come with owning a business can sneak up on you. This can cause unexpected levels of stress and anxiety. 

A Canadian mental health study taken in 2020 found that 62% of business owners felt depressed at least once a week. Additionally, 54% said that stress impacted their level of concentration at work. After interacting with many of his own clients who are also business owners, Brian Fielkow, CEO of Jetco Delivery, expects the numbers in the United States to be higher. This is especially true when you add in the effects of the pandemic experienced over the last year.

However, we’ve come up with practical tips to help get you back on your feet. Today we’re going to focus on three ways that small business owners can ensure that they are mentally healthy as they work towards building their empires.

Need A Mental Health Break? Get Moving

First, one of the most important things business owners can do is to get up and move as much as possible. Take a break from your work to stretch, go to a yoga studio, or join a kickboxing class. Movement reminds us that we are alive and that we have options. In addition, it also helps reduce potential back problems that can occur when one sits down for too long.

Helping Others: The Mental Health Cure

Next, consider volunteering! Taking the time to help others has proven to be one of the actions that can help us get out of a negative mindset. Seeing others happy and excited over something that you were able to do for them is contagious. It will fill you with joy and excitement as well.

An article written in Psychology Today notes that, “One reason behind the positive feelings associated with helping others is that being prosocial reinforces our sense of relatedness to others, thus helping us meet our most basic psychological needs”. Also, recent fMRI studies have shown neural evidence that suggests a link between generosity and happiness in the brain. Here are some fun ways to get involved with others:

  1. Give to organizations with transparent aims and results
  2. Find ways to integrate your skills with the needs of others
  3. Give your time by volunteering
  4. Stop to help someone in need 

Refocus Your Attention

Lastly, think about completely removing your attention from your work altogether. Be sure to do something that brings you joy. For example, play with your pet, go to the movies with a friend, or read an interesting book. Get your creative juices flowing in a way that disconnects you from your business.

When it is time to get back to work you’ll be refreshed, excited to get to work and full of new ideas.
