Running a small business can be a lonely endeavor. It’s easy to feel like it’s all on you – because it usually is. But you may be overlooking some help that’s readily at hand. Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll explore some social media marketing partners that you may not know you have. And today is a great day to start, because it’s your day, or rather your week.
Social Media Marketing Partners in the Spotlight
National Small Business Week: Each year in May, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recognizes small businesses with a variety of events that lead to the announcement of the Small Business Person of the Year. This year the event runs from May 12 – 16.
Participating in National Small Business Week events is a great way to get started with social media. Online training, social media conversations, and follow-up workshops are just some of the ways to get involved. Social media powerhouses Twitter and Facebook are supporting National Small Business Week and social media marketing is a major focus throughout the five day event and beyond.
Twitter – a little birdie with a big wing span
National Small Business week kicked off at Twitter’s San Francisco-based corporate headquarters. Events throughout the week will focus on social media marketing to grow your business. Follow the hashtag #smallbiz to join the conversation. Not sure what that’s all about? Read The Beginner’s Guide to the Hashtag, then dive right in. Set up your business Twitter account – it’s free. Then post a tweet. Start with something simple – @Insertyourbusinessnamehere is celebrating with other #smallbiz during National Small Business Week. Of course, use your real Twitter handle!
If you’re located in Boston, Washington, D.C., or Kansas City, you’re in luck. Other special events are slated for your town. You can check out the schedule here. Most likely you aren’t in one of those cities but not to worry. The SBA has a slate of online webinars, including some great choices focused on social media, ecommerce, and mobile technology. Hurry, space is limited, but some events will be available online in a few weeks.
Pump up your SMM with Facebook Fit
Facebook is also a friend of National Small Business Week, announcing just last week that it will hold a series of Facebook Fit events in five cities between June and August. These boot-camp events are aimed at helping small businesses grow, not only through social media marketing, but with other fundamental business skills. QuickBooks, LegalZoom, and Square are partnering with Facebook to round out these events.
Small Business Person of the Year
The announcement of the Small Business Person of the Year takes place in Washington, D.C. on May 15 and 16. Find the nominee from your state here. With your new social media marketing moves, next year your name could be on this list! By the way, the SBA provides tons of assistance to small businesses throughout the year – everything from education and financing to government contracting. If you don’t know about them, you should!
